Joining The Local Airport Commission

I joined the local airport commission in June 2017.

I noticed a local news item that one of the long time commissioners has passed away so I knew there would be an opening.  I called the Mayor and asked to be appointed to the commission.

The person I wished to replace had already been filled but there was another opening and he would check to see if it was filled.  It was not, so that's how I got on the commission.

Since joining the commission, we have replaced two other spots so we've replaced 4 out of 5 commissioners in the last two years.  The remain commissioner has been there since maybe 2000.

I would have to say we all make a good group who are truly interested in promoting and improving the airport as much as we can.

One thing I've found to be frustrating is working with government money and grants.  It seems to take forever to get anything accomplished.  I'm used to small businesses, and that's not how business works.  Businesses have to be much more flexible and responsive in day-to-day matters and the handling of money.

All that being said, being a part of this commission has really been a joy.  I love working with these people and working on projects for airport improvements.

Late last year we hired an Airport Manager with an instructor license (CFI).  This has been a dream ever since I've been on the commission to have a local flight instructor, and, the first time in many years we could do so.  With an instructor, we can really build more airport activity and thus make it more profitable.  Since the Airport is owned by the city, it makes the airport more attractive not being a liability.
